In partnership with the Stromme Foundation, AGO has been implementing the Enhanced Livelihood Through Commercial Agriculture Project (ELCAP) since 2021 across the Manyoni, Iramba, and Ikungi districts. This initiative addresses the inevitable need for agricultural development in the face of global climatic shifts that threaten every aspect of human life. ELCAP emphasizes the farming of food crops such as maize and sorghum , alongside cash crops like sunflower and pigeon peas.
Impact of the Project:
● The ELCAP project has introduced farmers to modern agricultural skills such as Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), Conservation Agriculture, and the use of basins and reap lines and provided them with power tillers.
● Reached 6,000+ individuals through demonstration farms on Saving and Producer Groups (SPGs). 2
“Before, I would harvest only 8 bags from the same plot. Now, I harvested 18 bags of maize, which are big and healthy thanks to the moisture retention and soil improvement from the biochar.” Mr. Yohana from Iramba explained how biochar changed his harvests.
